Project: Replacing an older XP workstation running MS office 2007 with a Win7 machine running MS Office 2013.
Network environment: Windows SBS 2003
Problem Being Addressed:
Outlook 2013 compatibility with Exchange 2003.
The Approach Taken:
MS Exchange 2003 is no longer supported and Outlook 2013 in not compatible with it. Client will need to downgrade their Outlook version if possible or purchase Outlook 2010. (Volume License agreements offer downgrade rights) Alternatively, you can set up their Exchange account as IMAP. Also, if clients use Comcast Business Class service they can install Outlook 2007 for free typically up to 10 licenses.
Ultimately the client should seriously consider upgrading their server as 2003 is now at it’s end of life cycle.
After installation of MS Office 2013 upon attempting to set up users exchange email in Outlook an error is received.
“The resource that you are trying to use is located on an unsupported version of Microsoft Exchange. Contact your e-mail administrator for assistance”
Things We Would Do Differently:
For clients in an Exchange 2003 environment, you should discuss with them before any new system deployments the incompatibilities of Outlook 2013 and Exchange 2003. Decide on the best available options and/or work-around before implementing the deployment.
