Case Study: Mozilla Thunderbird Email Migration to new Workstation

Background

Thunderbird is an email client from Mozilla, the makers of Firefox.

Problem Being Addressed:

Thunderbird has no export feature for its profiles. Not knowing the login information for the email account/accounts makes setup not possible without the user present.

The Approach Taken:

Using a program called MozBackup makes the process extremely easy. MozBackup is able to fully backup profiles from:
•Firefox 1.0+ •Thunderbird 1.0+ •Sunbird 0.3 – 0.9 •Flock 1.0 – 2.6 •Postbox (Express) 1.0+ •SeaMonkey 1.0a+ •Mozilla Suite 1.7 – 1.7.x •Spicebird 0.4 – 0.8 •Songbird 1.0+ •Netscape 7.x, 9.x •Wyzo
This includes:
Full backup and restore of bookmarks, mail, contacts, history, extensions, passwords, cache etc.

Problems Experienced:

In this environment they use Mozilla Thunderbird as the main email client of choice. When setting up new PC’s they needed the email profiles moved to the new workstations so no setup would be needed when business begins the following day. Thunderbird having no export feature and with no documentation for the accounts makes this procedure difficult.

Things We Would Do Differently:

When migrating email profiles between workstations using Mozilla Thunderbird use MozBackup. Having this as a tech tool makes moving information from Mozilla products to new workstations extremely easy and fast. 1gb of full profile information backup took about 4min, sending to a server location on the 1GB client network.

Only a small number of people use Thunderbird for an email client I think this app might be used more for Firefox migrations.
